Is The “Amblin Approach” Workable For The Fantastic Four?

Josh Trank, the director of the new Fantastic Four movie, has stated he is presenting an “Amblin-like approach” with the new film. Amblin is Steven Spielberg’s production house and the approach refers to making sure fantastic elements such as E.T. are rooted in realism. That is the sci-fi variation on what made 1973’s The Exorcist’s such a memorable and successful horror outing.

Is this approach going to work with The Fantastic Four reboot?

It would be very unfair to criticize a film no one has yet seen said a post on Gianfrancesco Genoso’s website. However, the major reshoots ordered on the film were supposedly designed to make the feature more exciting. Dull superhero films are not exactly going to be really successful. The trailer to the film was dark and brooding, as should be expected considering the more serious approach being taken. The trouble with the trailer is it lacked any real super-heroic excitement.

The superhero film genre could be a very wide open one. Artists could push the envelope in terms of just how many different approaches are possible. Really, if all the superhero movies were the same, they would get boring really quick. Boring superhero films would mean the end of the genre.

That said, there are certain conventions the genre does have to stick to in order to remain successful. A $150 million brooding talk-a-thon is not exactly going to make Fantastic Four or any hero film a hit. Hopefully, the right amount of action sequences are going to be in the film.
