As summer heat swept into the Las Vegas Valley, 94-year-old Jean Jackson found herself with an unsalvageable air conditioning unit, a potentially dangerous situation for someone her age. The only fix to Jackson’s problem wasn’t cheap, making it an unrealistic option. Goettl Air Conditioning got word of Jackson’s predicament and, along with The Sunny Plumber, performed $14,000 of services pro bono. After years of seeing similar companies rip off their customers with unnecessary charges, I was shocked see so much kindness and generosity. This summer, Jackson hasn’t worried about being readmitted to the hospital for heatstroke and she has been able to stay in the residence she’s called home for 33 years.
In today’s society, success is often associated with greed. Bigwig CEOs are known for making big corporate decisions, disregarding what is best for their customers. It’s rare to find a company that continues to give back to the community after earning success, and that’s why I’m refreshed to see that Goettl Air Conditioning remembers its roots. An idea that began with two innovative brothers in 1939 turned into a successful air conditioning company that revolutionized the air conditioning industry with developments in the realm of evaporative air cooling.
As I dug deeper into the company, I found that this isn’t the first time Goettl Air Conditioning has been recognized for helping people. In 2015, owner Ken Goodrich set up the Post 9/11 Veterans Tools Award, a scholarship offered annually to a young veteran in the College of Southern Nevada’s air conditioning technology program who are looking to kickstart an HVAC career. The scholarship awards $1,000 to the recipient so that they can buy the tools necessary to work in the air conditioning industry. Goodrich also funds the “Son of a Gun” Scholarship at CSN, rewarding students that come from a line of family members in the HVAC industry. His partnership with CSN’s air conditioning tech program continues to flourish; he funds their J. Duncan Air Conditioning Technology Lab. I’ve learned that great business requires great leadership, and Goettl Air Conditioning has proved to me that they have both.
